Get in the game (the ear game that is)

If you are a single-pieced gal, this post isn’t for you. I love ear piercings, but so many get it wrong so often. I have often been complimented for my ear stack and am quite proud of the 12+ holes I have cultivated over the last 20 years. There is a method, and yet, it’s also free-flowing. Annoying, right? Today’s stack is dedicated to me distilling my theories on what works and what doesn’t so you too can get in the game. Read until the end for a list of some of my favorite brands (plus a discount code).
First off a few notes: Nothing drives me crazier than a new piercing with a faux black diamond to really enhance the bruised/red look. Don’t do it. It’s not edgy. You just look emo.
Also annoying: too many holes too close together. It’s all about spacing and real estate and some have this more than others. So make sure before you go wild that you let your ear consultant take a look at that acreage and assess accordingly.
And the last pro tip of don’ts: DON’T get too many at once on both sides. Trust me here. You need a side to lie on and- it ain’t fun to struggle with being kept awake all night suffering from throbbing lobes.
Okay now that the don’ts are done — my do’s!
Start biggest on the bottom and then get more petite as you work your way up.
I like to mix solid with a bit of diamonds when styling my ear, my approach has always been that your bottom hole is obviously the one that you were changing out the most, so don’t get too attached to what’s there. You’re gonna want to have the hoop of the moment or the faux teardrop of the moment at your ready and disposal to make that your daily change up.

After that, I tend to get a little bit more permanent in my thinking, starting with a diamond hoop, then a solid hoop. If you’re gonna start doing a lot of this, the most stable thing to think about is this: simple is always better and sometimes less more if you have a ton of piercings. I always say do one diamond, do one stud, do one hoop, do one solid, and then make the big pieces your bottom lobe.
If you’re gonna go up and creep into your cartilage, those are the ones I hate changing the most, and those are the ones that have always been the most irritating and difficult for me so what’s in those is something I never have to change for me. It’s nothing with a post. I have threaders in both sides of my ears because it’s easy. It doesn’t hurt or irritate my ear when I sleep, and I just make sure that the drama comes from the diamond on one side and the exaggerated threader on the other. Play around, see what makes sense, and just take my word for it, no black diamonds.
